Continuous Data Protection And Backup Are Preventive Means Of Data Loss

Continuous and secured access to critical data is a need for the smooth and profitable operation of most businesses. Loss of thousands of dollars can result from the loss of any data. Recovery of the lost data can sometimes happen and can take up huge working hours. Therefore, data protection and data backup are of key importance.

Data Backup

In the dictionary of information technology, copying of data is referred to as data backup. If the original data is lost, these additional copies of data are used for restoration of the lost data. Data backup usually refers to these additional copies. The purpose of traditional backup is two-dimensional. Restoration of a state after a disaster is the primary purpose of data backup. The secondary purpose of data backup is restoration of files in small numbers following their accidental deletion or corruption. Data backup is the ultimate means of defense against the loss of data. It is in brief, the process of data protection.

Requirements for data storage are considerable as a traditional backup system supports at least one additional copy of all data. The process of managing the data backup system and organizing the storage space is complicated. In the modern age of computing technology, data storage devices are of different types for data backups. The best utility of data storage devices is their different arrangements in different ways to provide data security, portability and geographic redundancy.

Selection, extraction and manipulation of data are done before the data is transferred to the location of its storage. Many techniques different in kind have technically been developed to optimize the procedure of data protection. These include techniques for optimization, encryption, compression and de-duplication of open files and data sources. Many individuals and organizations work to define validation techniques as well as measurements and expected outcome of the process. Recognition of human factors and limitations that a data backup scheme involves is immensely important.

Data backup and systems of data backup are often confused with fault-tolerant systems and archives due to a significant overlap in technology. Backup is different from an archive in the sense that archive is a primary copy of data while backup is a secondary copy. Archives the primary copy of data are kept safe for use in future. Backup the secondary copy of data is kept at hand for replacement of the original data. Fault tolerant systems differ from data backup systems in the sense of its assumption that is different from the latter’s. A fault is not supposed to cause any data loss by fault tolerant systems. That a fault causes data loss is the assumption of data backup systems.

Continuous Data Protection

CDP is abbreviation of continuous data protection. CDP has advanced as a feasible and inexpensive substitute to scheduled and traditional backup. No scheduled backup is there with continuous data protection. On the contrary, CDP ensures automatic backup of something that is written to a disk at any time. The snapshots are recorded on journal or electronic log after they are automatically taken of the file change.

Continuous data protection is also termed as real time data backup or continuous data backup. It refers to continuous backup of computer files and data in an automatic process. It supports data backup by copying changes to and capturing different versions of the data. It allows the administrator or user to recover data at any time. CDP uses a separate location for the storage of changes to data. Methods for continuous capturing of changes to data by means of different technologies are multiple. CDP based solutions to the damage or loss of data offer superior granularities of the objects that are restorable like files, messages, mailboxes, database files and log.

Advantages of CDP

The prime advantage of continuous data protection is that data recovery by this process is almost instantaneous because a digital journal records each data change. IT professionals examine the digital journal to find out solutions to a host of data related problems like mutilated or corrupted data and lost files. Investigating data take less time with continuous data protection than a traditional backup system.

CDP has some other advantages regarding staffing as well as security. As CDP is an automated data backup system, it removes the time-consuming tasks of storage management and focuses on business critical tasks by freeing up staff in case of staffing. When it comes to security, CDP has no equal to it. To keep files safe and secure from viral corruption it offers a distinguished means of security. It also allows IT staff to backup clean versions of virally damaged files and data.
